Dave’s Free Car Repair Advice

Car repair question? Ask Dave – he’ll do his best to help you figure out what’s wrong with your car & how to get it fixed so it’s running like a new one.

Sunny tells me:  My 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix auto transmission doesn’t shift to 4th gear on freeways. I knew it by looking at the rpm meter. It goes to 4 and more when I try to speed more than 60 mph. I took it to dealer and he advised to change the transmission asap so that I don’t get stranded when whole of it fails.

Will it totally fail really soon? Can I keep driving it for 10,000 more miles with just 3 gears working and not get on freeways? Please advise. I appreciate it in advance.

Sunny, first check to see if you are putting it into overdrive. Not putting it into overdrive would result in the condition that you are having.

Secondly I would have the fluid analyzed and probably changed before going to extremes and spending a lot of money on a new one.

Sunny, your transmission may last for years running like that. You never know when any part on your entire vehicle may go out, but don’t get nervous or worrisome. I would think that you could get another 10K out of it by not hitting the freeways. What have you got to lose but maybe getting to work late someday, maybe!

Good luck Sunny…
