Dave’s Free Car Repair Advice

Car repair question? Ask Dave - he’ll do his best to help you figure out what’s wrong with your car & how to get it fixed so it’s running like a new one.

Jenny tells me:  I have a V6 96 Mercury Mystique. It has been knocking for a couple of months now. The sticker says the oil isn’t supposed to be changed for another 100 miles or so but when I checked the oil there was barely any in there so I put some in.

The car is still knocking and a couple weeks later the ac kind of went out and I smelled something burning and saw white smoke coming from underneath the hood. I popped the hood and saw that the smoke was coming from underneath the car. It also looked like there had been oil leaking from the side of the engine (?). I turned my car back on a couple of hours later and drove around. It seemed to be fine. I didn’t hear any knocking anymore, there was no smoke, and the ac was working. When I stopped the car, I didn’t see any oil leaking either. What could be the problem?

Jenny, now you have no problems it sounds to me, although this could be the calm before the storm.

By the way I appreciate your descriptions of the different problems you had, at times I get no information at all.

The knocking noise your engine made would be the worst of the issues. Since the knocking went away instead of getting worse, is a very good thing. Usually knocks get worse real fast and major engine work is required.

When you have your oil changed next time, be sure to check it right out the door because many times the mechanic will not fill it all the way for reasons unknown to me.

The smoke and the oil leak on the side of the engine sounds to me like you must have picked up a plastic bag while driving (possibly) and this may have landed on the exhaust manifold creating the smoke situation and the appearance of oil on the engine from the melted plastic bag.

I don’t have any idea why your AC  failed then began to work again.

Thanks again Jenny, I hope all is well and Drive safe…

Dave
