Subject: Brake Job
Sherri asks: Hi Dave. We just had our brakes replaced by a non-dealership on our 2006 Ford Escape. While they seem smooth, the brake assist doesn’t seem as active. Could they have missed or messed up something to cause a problem with the brake assist? Thanks in advance.
Sherri, it almost sounds to me like the rear brakes need to be adjusted if they are rear drum brakes and if you have 4 wheel disk then there could be a loose vacuum hose that goes to the assist canister. It is manifold vacuum that helps the power brakes function like they do. If you look under the hood at the canister you will see a large black hose going to the canister and that is the vacuum line I am talking about.
I don’t know how they did the job but you may also have air in the lines and may need to have the brake lines bled to remove all the air. Take it back and tell the shop that the brakes do not feel right and you are concerned about your safety. Maybe they will check for you and find out why.
Good luck…
Dave
