Car repair question? Ask Dave - he’ll do his best to help you figure out what’s wrong with your car & how to get it fixed so it’s running like a new one.

Hi Dave, just viewed a vauxhall corsa 1.6i sport 1997 which is on ebay, the guy said i could have it for £600.00, he said it stalls when it is cold but then drives lovely when warmed up, i have done a hpi check and all is fine, the car looks lovely in and out, but it seems to cheap and makes me wary. Many thanks.

Hello Karen. You did good on running an HPI check first. Especially since looking at it online.

The performance of the car when cold could be a tune up situation. Many vehicles that are a bit older will have a tendency to do just that. Usually when a vehicle runs rough cold it is meaning that the fuel/air mixture is too lean at that time. A cold engine needs a richer fuel mixture, as a warm engine will run better with a leaner mixture.

Check the mileage of the vehicle and remember that good deals are to be had, but be careful when purchasing “sight unseen”.

Also one other thing, Are you going to pick it up or have it delivered and are you allowed to test drive it first some how to check for overall handling before you pay for it? Just something to think about.

The vehicle should get great mileage.

BTW, be sure to read Ken’s article on Extended Car Warranties. This is something you always want to consider if they’re available for the used car you’re buying.

Good Luck Karen, I hope I have helped you…

Dave
