Dave’s Free Car Repair Advice

Car repair question? Ask Dave - he’ll do his best to help you figure out what’s wrong with your car & how to get it fixed so it’s running like a new one.

Have you wondered about which oil to use in your car when you get an oil change, and the importance of the proper viscosity (thickness)?

First thing I’ll say is that we all have our favorite brand of oil in which we all totally believe in, which is OK as long as it is of a high quality and NOT paraffin (wax) based. There is a wide variety of popular brands to choose from, some being synthetic, synthetic blend or good ol’ motor oil. My suggestion is to use the manufacturers recommended oil type.

The oil viscosity is something that you may want to think about. Some people use thicker oil in the hot summer months and a thinner oil in the winter since the colder weather will have a tendency to make your oil thicker until your engine begins to warm up. Here once again it is wise to follow your owner’s manual and use the recommended viscosity.

When taking your car down to the local oil change shop, be sure to inquire about the brand and viscosity of the oil that the shop is going to put in your vehicle. Some shops will charge you extra for the specific required lubricant your owner’s manual recommends, but in the long run it is well worth the cost.
